'The Sad Case' - Short Film Album


Helen Coupe is a make-up artist, living in Bristol, UK, working in the areas of Theatre, Film and Television. She is also a lifelong learning make-up tutor at the University of Bristol Drama Department.

This website is a showcase for her work. It also includes some of her research into the historical use of make-up and there are also hints and tips on working with cosmetics. There is a gallery of real-life injuries for research on bruising techniques, and examples of her mask making processes.

Helen has worked in a large variety of locations including the Bristol Old Vic Basement, the Tobacco Factory and with Shakespeare's Globe on a filming project.

She has designed and applied make-up and hair for plays including Faustus, Oliver Twist, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Real Inspector Hound, Ted Hughes' Tales From Ovid, Revolting Rhymes, One For The Road, Cabaret and numerous pantomimes including Dick Whittington, Canterbury Tales Pantomime, and Panto on Toast - a pantomime for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Her film credits include the independent films: The Light That Followed, Obsession, an as yet untitled Car Crash short and Shooting Up

Helen has run workshops for theatres, touring companies and University students on topics including Ageing, Bruising, Elizabethan and Restoration hair and cosmetics, and 1940's movie glamour.

Helen is a graduate of the University of Bristol Drama Department. Her dissertation was on "The Elizabethan Face", an in depth study of the make-up used during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 (1558 - 1603). This involved historical research and practical application of the cosmetics of the period. She is continuing her research to prepare a book on the same subject.
